Crofting Tour
(Updated for 2022!)
A real opportunity to see a working croft in action.
A unique chance to see one of the island’s major industries in action and a chance to meet and greet crofters going about their daily work.
You will see the animals in their natural environment, learn about the use of the land and discover a bit about the crofting history of our island. You will visit an authentic island Blackhouse and discover where the village folk and their farm animals all lived together under one thatched roof. We will also visit a working island croft and see the crofters at work with their animals.
We will also visit the Comunn Eachdraidh Nis which houses a local museum, gift shop and cafe.
In addition you will be taken to the moorland to see at first hand the summer houses (shielings) used by crofters in yester year while their animals grazed on the heather, thus allowing new growth on their croftland.
Estimated duration 6 hours
